Divemaster Internships at Phi Phi Barakuda

Divemaster Internships at Phi Phi Barakuda

Divemaster Internships – So you want to become a divemaster but you want more than just a 6 week course. You want to live the dream and get the working experience needed to start you on your professional diver career.

At Barakuda we have three different divemaster internships designed to fit different budgets and time schedules. Below you will find detailed our three divemaster internships, the classic course, the always popular ‘free’ course and the 50:50 for those who want something in the middle.

About Barakuda

Barakuda has been established on Koh Phi Phi for over 20 years and is one of the most popular dive shops both with tourists looking to dive and professional divers looking for work. We are dedicated to providing great dive training and have twice been awarded the ‘Outstanding Contribution to Professional Diver Education’ award from PADI.

If you want more reasons to consider Barakuda try these;

  • We have the largest (5 times bigger than our nearest competitor) retail sales department on Phi Phi and you get 10% sales commission on every sale you make as well as substantial discounts on any equipment bought.
  • We have the only Nitrox membrane compressor on Phi Phi and all staff and Dive Master Trainees (DMT’s) get to dive with nitrox for free.
  • Not nitrox qualified? – get your nitrox cert for the low price of 3,000 baht.
  • Get trained by people who believe that diving is not a way to make money but is a way to live their life.

Our philosophy is to provide the best possible training for all our students be they experiencing their first dives or training to become an instructor. What this means for the dive master candidates at Barakuda is that there are no time limits on the training or limits on the number of dives that you do during the course. For example if you join the team with 20 logged dives then you should expect to have 80-100 logged dives (easily achievable with our daily morning, afternoon, wreck and night dive trips) by the time you finish the divemaster course, however there is no limit since we will not finish your course until we are happy to have you represent Barakuda as one of the team.

What You Learn

During the Divemaster Internship program, you learn dive leadership skills through both classroom and independent study. You complete water skills and stamina exercises, as well as training exercises that stretch your ability to organize and solve problems as well as help others improve their scuba. You put this knowledge into action through a structured mentor based training program.

As you progress through your Divemaster course, you’ll expand your diving knowledge, hone your skills and increase your confidence. Then, as a Divemaster, you’ll use these attributes to lead, mentor and motivate other divers and experience the joy of seeing them transformed by the majesty of the aquatic realm on a tropical island.

What You Can Teach

After becoming certified as a Divemaster you will be authorized to:

  • Supervise both training and non-training-related activities by planning, organizing and directing dives.
  • Assist an instructor during the training sessions.
  • Lead certified divers on dives.

Let’s start with the most popular, the ‘Free’ divemaster internship now this is not the cheapest or fastest way to become a divemaster but it will give you invaluable experience working in one of Phi Phi’s biggest dive centers.

For those with more time come and spend 3.5 months with us on Phi Phi. All training and equipment requirements are provided free of charge for the duration of the course.

After the initial 4-6 weeks of training you will join the team as a divemaster for 2.5 months work experience guiding divers and assisting instructors. You will get paid for both dive bookings and equipment sales whilst all monies from leading dives/assisting will be retained by the shop to cover the cost of the course.

Double entry tourist visa if possible, otherwise a single entry tourist visa will do and we will advise you on how to complete a visa run to nearby Malaysia to obtain your second visa. If you do not have the rescue diver or CPR/first aid qualification they can be gained by adding 2 weeks to the length of the internship for each qualification needed.
